SNCU Up gradation: A strategic approach to quality Mother and Child Healthcare (MCH) delivery for 13 Sick Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) in Chhattisgarh

Ekam Foundation collaborated with the UNICEF, Chhattisgarh along with National Health Mission and the Directorate of Health Services (Chhattisgarh) in December 2015 for the project of SNCU up- gradation in order to improve the condition of infant care delivery across the state. SNCUs are neonatal units established at the district hospital in the vicinity of the labor room which provides special care to both inborn and out born sick neonates (all care except assisted ventilation and major surgery) for sick newborns. At present 13 SNCUs are functional across 12 districts (Raipur (2), Durg, Dhamtari, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, Ambikapur, Jagdalpur, Koriya, Korba, Raigarh, Mahasamund and Kawardha) providing 24/7 care delivery to the infants.   • Medical Equipment Maintenance
  • Recruitment & training of nurses and data entry operators
  • Recruitment of doctors
  • Microbial surveillance


  • 143 nurses have been recruited by far
  • 8 doctors have been recruited till now
  • 8 Data Entry Operators have been recruited in total
  • Through regular preventive maintenance visits by engineers the downtime of equipments has been reduced to 34 hours per equipment.
  • Total 134 breakdown calls have been received since Jan 2015’
  • The percentage of functional equipments has increased to 95% from 89% (Baseline)
