Keeping the baby healthy and your body happy during pregnancy: –
The aim of health education during pregnancy is to provide advice, reassurance and support, to address and treat health issues if any, and get effective screening during pregnancy. Lack of prenatal care has association with a 40% increase in the risk of neonatal death overall and doubling the risk among women delivering at or after 36 weeks’ gestation. It also increases the chance of serious problems like preterm birth, anemia and low birth weight. Low birth weight is a high-risk and can cause many health and learning problems for young children, including language delays, attention disorders and even neurological problems.
What is it so important to educate mothers during pregnancy?
During the antenatal period, it’s important to promote the health of the women and their babies before and after birth. Mothers should be told about the benefits of good nutrition, adequate rest that their bodies need, good hygiene, family planning, exclusive breastfeeding and immunization. The importance of antenatal care cannot be ignored because it can detect abnormalities and preventable illnesses in mother and child, if any.
There are many important aspects to antenatal care that go a long way for- to-be-moms, to reap physical and psychological benefits.
But, lack of education of mothers can cause serious health issues for the mother and can lead to death of the newborn.
So, what can be done to educate mothers?
Meetings and camps can be arranged in the rural villages and in cities for women, so that they can learn more about certain health issues occurring in pregnancy such as dietary intake of essential foods like dairy products, Protein-rich foods and fruits, the hours of daily rest necessary, the need for exercise, the importance and timing of antenatal visits, the risk of smoking in pregnancy and proper spacing of babies. Women should also be taught the importance of taking high-fiber foods to avoid constipation and prevent nausea and vomiting. The need for various antenatal procedures such as blood examination, breast-care during pregnancy and immunizations to prevent Tetanus and Rubella infection are required are a must.
A mother can help reduce her baby’s risk of many of the leading causes of infant mortality, including congenital disabilities, preterm birth, low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and certain pregnancy complications, by good self-care.
Mothers must be more educated and aware of their health conditions before they decide to bring another life on earth. Proper and timely Vaccinations is another area which needs to be taken care of, with concern.
A higher literacy level of women can significantly help in preventing infant deaths.
