What is Early Childhood Development?
Birth to six years of age, is the period when the foundation —physical, cognitive, socio-emotional development, language and personality are laid. Development starts in the womb and refers to as the ‘Holistic Development of the Child’.
Why Does Early Childhood Development [ECD] matter after all?
Every year 1.5 million children die in India before reaching the age of 6, because of lack of care and protection. Those who survive, don’t reach their full potential. They do not receive adequate Nutrition, Care and Opportunities to learn. It is proven by neuroscience research that 90% of the child’s brain growth occurs by the time a child is 5 years of age. Investing in your children through ECD programs ensuring they have the right stimulation, nurturing and nutrition – is one of the smartest investments, a country can make to address inequity, break the cycle of poverty, ensure gender justice and contribute to human development.
There are ample reasons to believe how critical the early age is So, what can be done ??? Well, India has the world’s largest ECD program. It is called the Integrated Child Development Scheme [ICDS]. This program offers children, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating mother—a package of services from local “Anganwadi” [childcare] centers.
With regards to child health, India’s story over the past decade has been of success. Yet both, level and rate of improvement of child health in India, remain widely unequal. With regards to health, the best tools for fighting these inequalities are well known Access to vital micronutrients, immunization from life-threatening diseases, clean water and local sanitation and prevention with rapid treatment of infectious disease.
These tools must be combined with strategies that prioritize the so- called ‘Last Mile’—getting effective interventions to population that need them most. Therefore, we must ensure that children’s early experiences are positive and that they have a secure foundation for development and lifelong learning. Since early childhood intervention is child centered and family focused, it builds upon adult capabilities and helps parents cope with daily challenges and stress of parenting services. They are tailored to meet the individual needs of the child and family. Focus is on supporting the child in their natural environment and in their daily routine activities.
Given the alarming fact, that ‘India tops the list of countries having maximum kids under 5 years of age, living with disabilities,’ it is crucial that public and private sectors take steps to address the epidemic immediately.
