Dr. Sailakshmi Balijepalli - Founder (EKAM Foundation)
EKAM Foundation was founded by Dr Sailakshmi Balijepalli, a qualified pediatrician in the year 2007. EKAM was first conceptualized as a Community health project where a group of doctors screened children in orphanages in Chennai and supported their health requirements. As the scope and scale of activities grew, Dr Sailakshmi registered Ekam as a non-profit trust in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in the year 2009. Today, EKAM has its operations in 8 states of India and has on board a competent team of around 80 staff and consultants including doctors, nurses, public health professionals, social workers and management professionals under the leadership of Dr Sailakshmi.
In addition, the team is supported by an expert panel of over 50 advisors and volunteers. In the year 2015, Dr Sailakshmi was awarded with the prestigious Nari Shakti PuraskarAward by His Excellency, the President of India in recognition of her efforts to improve the standards of women’s health in India through EKAM. Dr Sailakshmi is also an Ashok Fellow and has received many prestigious awards for her devotion to her work. EKAM Foundation has been widely recognized for its efforts to lower maternal and child deaths in Tamil Nadu.
